Stair safety and a walker? Get to know the innovative stair walker AssiStep!
AssiStep is a device to help people with mobility problems climb stairs safely as well as a walker for stairs for seniors that provides the much-needed support.
It is an innovative mobility aid specifically designed to provide support and safety on stairs - a walker for stairs. The stair walker was developed in 2012 in Norway by engineering students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in cooperation with users as well as occupational and physio therapists.

The device was tested and certified in 2015 by the renowned German inspection and certification company TÜV – after which the AssiStep was finally ready to be launched.

Who can use the AssiStep?
Everyone who is in need of additional help when walking the stairs up and down. It is also being used as a training device to improve the existing gait function or in for example stroke rehabilitation as the stairwalker can be used using different gripping methods. The user can adjust the position of the hands according to his or her personal preference and ability.

As the handle will be adjusted to the user during the installation process and can be readjusted later on – if necessary – due to for example the user growing.
The stair walker AssiStep is used by people with a spectrum of medical indications and disabilities as well as seniors who are insecure while using stairs.
Possible users can be:
- people who suffer from neuropathy,
- people with incomplete paraplegia,
- people who have difficulties with grabbing rails,
- people who suffered bone fractures due to for example a previous fall,
- seniors,
- people who have suffered from a stroke,
- or who have multiple sclerosis,
- people with cerebral palsy,
- people with Parkinson’s.

How does the AssiStep work?
The AssiStep stair walker consists of a handle which comes with a patented locking mechanism and a handrail which is mounted along the wall.
The walker for stairs is designed to take as little space as possible and to blend discreetly into your home. The handle can be folded in towards the wall when it is not in use.
Both the handrail as well as the handle are manufactured using only high quality and sustainable materials such as
stainless steel and anodized aluminum.
How to use the stair walker AssiStep?
The user positions the handle in front of him or herself and then moves the handle along the railing for the extra safety and needed support. The AssiStep provides the option for different ergonomic grips:
- one hand
- combination of handrail and handle
- use the vertical part of the handle.
The height of the handle will be customized to the height of the user during the installation and can be adjusted if needed at any time.
The stair walker is manufactured using only high-quality materials and blends in with your home in a very discreet manner as takes up as little space as possible.
To keep the stairs free to be used by other people who profit from the AssiStep handrail, the handle can be folded in towards the wall if not in use.
